The KonMari Method®? is a decluttering and organising technique developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organising consultant and author. Marie Kondo's book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," introduced this method to the world.
There are only a handful of Certified KonMari Consultants in New Zealand, and Sort My House is lucky enough to have one of them working with us. You can learn more about Shanley and how she can help you here.
The KonMari Method®? encourages individuals to tidy their homes by category rather than by room and emphasizes the importance of keeping only the items that truly spark joy.
The KonMari Method®? consists of the following key principles:
- Commitment: The first step is to commit to tidying up and organising your living space. It's important to have a strong motivation and dedication to complete the process.
- Tidying by Category: Instead of tidying room by room, The KonMari Method® suggests organising belongings by category. The recommended order is clothing, books, papers, miscellaneous items (komono), and sentimental items.
- Spark Joy: The central idea of The KonMari Method® is to keep only the items that bring joy and discard or donate the rest. When sorting through belongings, individuals are encouraged to hold each item and consider whether it elicits a genuine feeling of joy.
- Discard First: Before organising and finding specific places for items, The KonMari Method® advises discarding unnecessary possessions. This step helps reduce clutter and ensures that only the most cherished items are kept.
- Organise by Category: Once unnecessary items have been discarded, the remaining belongings are organised. The KonMari Method® emphasizes finding a designated place for each item, ensuring that everything has its own space.
- Gratitude: Throughout the process, expressing gratitude towards possessions is encouraged. Thanking items for their service and acknowledging their role in your life can help create a positive mindset and appreciation for the things you choose to keep.
